GRE Exam Format (2024 Revised Version)

Since September 2023, the revised shorter GRE format has been live. It’s more time-efficient yet equally rigorous.

Total Duration: 1 hour 58 minutes

  • Total Duration: Less than 2 hours

  • Reading (~35 mins): Academic passages with comprehension questions

  • Listening (~36 mins): Lectures and conversations with follow-up questions

  • Speaking (~16 mins): Record verbal responses to academic prompts

  • Writing (~29 mins): Integrated task + opinion essay

Available both online (Home Edition) and at authorized test centers worldwide, it also allows you to send your highest combined scores through the MyBest® Score option.

Sections & Focus

  • Verbal Reasoning (41 minutes): Reading comprehension, critical reasoning, and vocabulary-in-context

  • Quantitative Reasoning (47 minutes): Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis

  • Analytical Writing (30 minutes): One “Analyze an Issue” essay (argument task removed)

Additional updates:

  • No unscored or research sections

  • Scores remain valid for 5 years

  • Offered both as a computer-based and at-home test

Scoring System

Scores are reported as follows:

  • Verbal Reasoning: 130–170 (1-point increments)

  • Quantitative Reasoning: 130–170 (1-point increments)

  • Analytical Writing: 0–6 (half-point increments)

  • Total Score (V + Q): 260–340

Score Benchmarks

  • 320+ – Competitive for Ivy League and top global universities

  • 310–319 – Ideal for strong MS or MBA programs

  • 300–309 – Acceptable for mid-tier international schools
