What is the ESAT Exam?

Dutch ESAT:
The Engineering and Science Admissions Test (ESAT) is a newly introduced, subject-specific standardized exam used for admission to select competitive STEM programs at prestigious universities in The Netherlands and Europe, such as TU Delft, Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), and University of Twente.
Launched to ensure a fair and rigorous assessment of academic ability, ESAT is specifically designed for students applying to bachelor’s programs in engineering, natural sciences, mathematics, and computer science, particularly those without final national exams like IB, A-levels, or CBSE/ISC.

UK ESAT (UAT):
The Engineering and Science Admissions Test (ESAT) is a newly launched, subject-specific entrance exam introduced in 2024 by Cambridge Assessment Admissions Testing (CAAT) under the broader University Admissions Test (UAT) umbrella. It is required by select top UK universities for admission to competitive undergraduate programs in engineering, natural sciences, physics, mathematics, and computer science.

Country Usage Comments
United Kingdom
Actively Used
Required by University of Cambridge, Imperial College London, and Warwick for selective STEM degrees
Other European Countries (e.g., Netherlands, Germany, France, etc.)
Not Used
These countries have their own entrance exams or qualification systems. For example: – Netherlands uses the Dutch ESAT independently for TU Delft, TU/e, etc. – Germany uses TestAS, university-specific entrance exams, or recognizes IB/A-levels. – France relies on high school diplomas, French Baccalauréat, or specific concours exams.

Important Distinctions of Esat exam:

  • The UK ESAT (under UAT-UK) is specifically for Cambridge, Imperial, and other top UK institutions starting from the 2024 admission cycle.

  • Netherlands has a separate ESAT, developed independently for admissions into Dutch technical universities. It is not affiliated with the UK ESAT/UAT system.

  • No other European Union countries (as of 2025) are using the UK ESAT for undergraduate admissions.

Guidance for Europe beyond the UK:

  • TU Delft ESAT (Netherlands)

  • TestAS (Germany)

  • Concours Communs INP or Parcoursup (France)

  • SAT/ACT + school transcript route (general admissions across Europe)
